Store your leather suede or nubuck shoes in a well ventilated room to prevent mould, and make sure you give your shoes at least 24 hours between wears to reduce moisture retention and maintain the integrity of the fibres - thus keeping them looking and feeling good.
Waterproofing suede or nubuck shoes will protect against moisture. Choose a good quality waterproofing product and follow the instructions on the package. Make sure you test the product on a discreet and less visible area of the shoe. Some leathers may change colour slightly with application.
Soles and heel tips must be kept in good condition. Replace both well before they wear completely down. Once the tip or sole is completely worn irreparable damage may be caused to the shoe, making them not only look unattractive, but also no longer nice to wear.
Make sure you go to a reputable shoe repairer. It's a small investment to make on such a special pair of shoes!
Brushing suede or nubuck shoes regularly will help to remove dirt from the hide and keep the shoe looking fresh and clean. Make sure you brush with the nap of the suede and not against it.
Suede rubbers are also available to remove those harder to shift marks from the upper. Application is similar to using a pencil eraser - but make sure you purchase a good quality rubber and make sure you brush your shoes after to restore that smooth soft finish.
Suede cleaners are available for a deeper clean of your suede or nubuck shoes. Similar to washing your hair, work the cleaner in to the shoe (following instructions on the packaging) for a much deeper clean than simply brushing or rubbing.
Post wash, follow the drying instructions for wet suede shoes. Again make sure you purchase a good quality suede cleaner for the best results - which should be a much brighter and cleaner shoe.
Gently blot the shoe with a microfibre towel (paper towel will do in need) to get as much water out of the shoe as possible. Do not rub.
Unlike leather shoes, suede / nubuck shoes will benefit from a very gentle amount of luke warm (not hot) air being applied, making sure there is constant movement and airflow is not concentrated, whilst brushing with a soft / medium bristle.
Allowing suede to dry naturally (after removing excess water) in a well ventilated area will suffice, but suede that dries without any attention whatsoever may become brittle and crack and possibly even shrink. Make sure you fill (but not too tightly) the shoe with something to maintain its shape throughout the drying process, and brush periodically.
Gently brush the affected area with a soft / medium bristled suede brush. For harsher stains apply the suede rubber or cleaner as per the instructions on the package. Allow mud to dry before brushing as it is less likely to stain.
